The heartbreaking tragedy that was the recent school shooting in Parkland, Florida in February has invigorated the gun control debate, but while Democrats say they’re trying to prioritize the safety of American children by focusing on tighter background checks and even total firearms confiscation, the kids of Florida are still suffering.
Five children, including most recently a 7-year-old, were shot in a period spanning 11 days last month in Jacksonville, Florida. All of these kids were innocent victims of gang violence — but the Democrats and the national media have remained largely silent.
“A War Zone”
Seven-year-old Tashawn Gallon was playing in his front yard with family and friends on Feb. 18 when an SUV drove up to the curb in front of his home and a passenger began shooting. Police told the local News 4 that several people in the yard returned fire.
Gallon, as well as a 23-year-old man who was also outside, were caught in the crossfire. Gallon later died at the hospital.
“Last night a 7-year-old was killed in a drive by shooting in our city. We must come together as a community and stop this senseless violence to give our kids a sense of hope and peace,” Curry tweeted on Feb. 19. “A 7-year-old had [his] life stolen by someone so hopeless and directionless that they didn’t hesitate to recklessly turn our streets into a war zone.”
In a period spanning 11 days before Gallon’s death, numerous other children were shot, including an 11-year-old, a 13-year-old, a 15-year-old, and a 17-year-old. The 15-year-old, whose name has not been released, was shot in the neck while riding a bike, but survived the shooting.
The 15-year-old showed reporters his injury, and lamented that he plans to “stay inside unless I’m going to school.” Police have not yet identified any suspects in this incident.
Additionally, less than two weeks prior to Gallon’s death, two boys, aged 11 and 13, were playing catch with a football when they were hit in the legs with bullets and shrapnel in a drive-by shooting that authorities say was not directed toward them; they were caught in the crossfire.
Both boys are expected to make full recoveries, as is a 17-year-old boy who was shot while walking near an elementary school in the nearby Arlington, Florida on Feb. 15.
While kids in Jacksonville and many other neighborhoods in the U.S. are dying due to gang violence, drive-by shootings, and other senseless acts, Democrats are ignoring them. Conservative commentator Dana Loesch blames this on the media. Loesch accused the media of believing that “crying white mothers are ratings gold,” while those injured or killed by gang violence, often people of color, are largely ignored by the media.
“There are thousands of grieving black mothers in Chicago every weekend,” Loesch told the CNN town hall in February, “and you don’t see town halls for them, do you? Where’s the CNN town hall for Chicago?”
Meanwhile, anti-gun Democrats are calling for a host of infringements on the second amendment, claiming that it needs to be done to keep our kids safe.
No word, however, on what they plan to do about the ongoing carnage in American cities. That just doesn’t fit their current agenda.
