A pastor once explained the importance of forgiveness to his congregation.
He said that forgiveness was not about telling those who wrong us that what they did was okay, but was instead an important step in allowing ourselves to heal from the hurt that they have caused.
This pastor explained that those who hurt others will move on with their lives, and sometimes never reflect back upon all the wrongs that they have committed, yet those that they have wronged can still feel the emotions of hurt, betrayal, sadness, and even rage about what happened, and will carry this burden with them for the rest of their lives.
Forgiveness does not mean forgetting what was done, but it does mean letting go of the hurt that is inside of you that was caused by someone else.
